The earth shook hard off Flores shore,
Homes fell and rescue teams dig more.
Aftershocks keep the night alive,
Survivors wait for dawn to arrive.
Rescue teams in eastern Indonesia recovered additional bodies Sunday, raising the death toll to 53 from a magnitude 7.7 earthquake that struck near Flores Island the previous day. Thousands remain displaced amid ongoing aftershocks and damaged infrastructure.
Landslides and Collapsed Structures
The shallow quake triggered landslides that buried remote villages across six regencies. More than 900 homes were destroyed and hundreds more damaged. Search efforts continue in hard-to-reach areas where communication and power remain disrupted.
Tsunami Warning Lifted
An initial tsunami warning was canceled after monitoring showed no significant sea-level changes. Authorities reported at least 135 injuries and approximately 5,000 people in temporary shelters. Aftershocks continue to rattle the region.
